F.N. Doubleday y Rudyard Kipling: un editor de ocho años

Lunes de catarro disfrutando lo que puedo del precioso y divertidísimo Haroun and the Sea of Stories de Salman Rushdie, que tenía medio aparcado, pero no olvidado. Mientras lo paso en grande con las aventuras de Haroun y su padre (Rashid, más conocido como "the Shah of Blah") me han venido a la cabeza unas historias de animales de Rudyard Kipling que solíamos leer de pequeños, no recuerdo si en el cole, en casa, o en ninguno de estos dos sitios. Era un libro rojo, y los textos eran unas adaptaciones en inglés con ilustraciones o grabados en color. Creo recordar. Buscando, buscando, estas historias de animales se encuentran en un librito de Kipling llamado Just So Stories, que por lo que veo en las bases del ISBN, aquí han publicado no tan últimamente Akal y Valdemar, con títulos distintos (creo que prefiero el de Akal).
Pues bien, en sus memorias editoriales, F.N. Doubleday, fundador de la famosa editorial estadounidense y editor —entre otros— de Rudyard Kipling, además de biógrafo de Rockefeller, cuenta la siguiente anécdota que ilustra el oficio del editor, sólo que esta vez el editor es su hijo Nelson:

When Nelson was about seven or eight years old, Mr. Kipling was writing a series of Just So Stories … These tales were published in St Nicholas and were vastly interesting to Nelson.

He conceived the idea that if Mr. Kipling would write some more animal stories, the titles of which he suggested, they might be made into a book, and asked if I would mind his writing to Mr. Kipling on the subject.

I said no, whereupon he inquired if I would lend him a five-cent stamp, which he promised to repay, and wrote a long letter in his own fist, addressed to “Rudyard Kipling, Rotting Dean,” giving a list of suggestions for new stories about different animals, and adding that if he wrote these stories and they were any good, his father, he was sure, would get them put in book form and give him (Nelson) a royalty of a cent a copy.

The Just So Stories finally came out, and Nelson applied for a contract for his cent-a-copy share. This has gone on for twenty or more years, and how much he has received I have no idea, but it must certainly be several thousand dollars.
